I was concerned when I was looking for a microphone to record audio for my video. (The on camera mic for my well-loved Nikon D5300 wouldnt cut it for my needs.) The reviews of this app scared the daylights out of me but...I bought it anyway. Though I havent played with the EQ settings yet, Im VERY happy to report I didnt have _ANY_ problems getting my iPhone 6S to run the app, get audio right away (it _does_ ask for access to the phones built-in mic port-which is the earpiece port) and export the audio a few different ways. Maybe I was fortunate to get updates that werent available to previous reviewers. No fears, no worries on my end. Looks like a great app that will work very, very well for me!
I was very hesitant to buy this app after reading the numerous reviews that says it doesnt work. I ended up taking a $7 gamble and it paid off. This app has been working 100% for me.
This is the only app Ive found that lets me adjust mic input level so when I use my lav for motovlogging it doesnt max out and brick my recordings. Hopefully this means Rode fixed any of the problems its been having previously.
No issues at all on iphone 5s, 6s or iPad. Good quality recordings, and no issue with noise. Needs a better manual.
I just used this app for a corporate video that I shot and it worked flawlessly. I was very impressed with the quality of sound that I got from using this app with my smartLav+. I was also impressed with how easy it was to send the files to my Dropbox account. I love this app.
But from other reviews it seems it doesnt work with the iPhone 6S. So, I wont be upgrading to an iPhone 6S anytime soon.
First off, I purchased the Rd IXY-L and am using an Iphone 6s+. Good sound quality over all for the recording options. It just doesnt work well WITH ios. For example, you cant video record on the iphone and use the rode mic, because it switches to stock mic. Also, sharing options dont allow to send through text messages (seriously?). The rode mic is pretty limited to only the rode app, which could be better. $5.99 is intense for what the app actually does. Im sure the free version would suit everyone better.
The app works great and allows you to record and control your recordings with many options and output formats. Its working great for me (iPhone 6, iOS 10.x). Ive used it with the iPhones built in mic as well as a wired Lab and a Röde Video Mic with very good results. It allows you to vary your gains and boost, apply filters to minimize hiss and even shape the sound a bit, like making it warmer or brighter sounding.
Pros: it gives you the basics of a professional field recorder without having to carry one. The app capabilities are very good.
Cons: the app interface is... ummmm, challenged. It is poorly designed from a usability standpoint, but works. Its just quirky and a bit dated, but it is easy enough to use. Example, on the record screen it shows you a live levels gauge, this is great so you can avoid clipping and set your gains appropriately. The issue, to set those levels you go to another screen and the live levels disappear. Really Röde? That type of thing.
There are some settings that can make your internal mic not function, but going back into the app and changing those brought everything back to normal - but I could see this confusing some people. Easy to correct though.
Overall, an excellent app and field recorder, great features albeit with a poorly designed user interface. The results I e achieved on voice overs and narrations have been excellent, as well as on the fly field recording. Highly recommended.
Some bad moments
Look I followed susan’s advice and it works I also increased the sample rate to 48000 Hz. Why. Could Rhode not notify us.It stopped working all of a sudden when beforehand it had been working ok. It has been 6 months since I had been able to use it and I was going to delete the app Thank you Susan for your feedbacks.
The app was working fine until about 6 months ago ,,,now the app no longer records on iPhone 6 and 8 . Support is pathetic .....Rode is more interested in microphones I suspect they refer you to some 6 irrelevant support questions. I cannot even give this a star as the app does not work on iPhones so do not buy until / or if the problem is fixed
I installed Rode Rec on my iPhone 7 today. The record button does not work. I now have four empty recordings that Icannot delete. What a waste of money
Recording is fine. But sharing a nightmare. No Airdrop or other quick possibilities of sharing between iOS devices without a internet connection. Doing field recordings in the wild and trying to transfer files to external drives is also not possible. Please wake up Rode.
Please fix the problem for 6s plus, cos I bought RODE iXY stereo mic especially for my iPhone and for recording our rehearsals in stereo.

PS Dear developers, I paid for the and for Rode stereo mic. Please update the app for it to work properly on the iPhone 6S Plus, for which I actually bought all that stuff!
Im not sure if this company isnt receiving enough bad reviews to fix these problems. I had audio, I wanted to edit, I was offered an upgrade to get editing features, and it installs a new app with none of the audio files I had in the lite version and no apearantly intuitive way of porting them over. So I cant cut them down, can email them to myself because there are no settings for compressing the files down to MP3 or similar. This is totally unacceptable and I may need to waste my time looking for a refund for $6 now. Please dont release updates that dont work, and please dont charge for them.
